A statement from the Grand Pavilion - 26th June 2020
Grand Pavilion large scale shows: October 2020 – January 2021
The coronavirus pandemic has, and continues to have, a profound effect on our lives and the way we live. People’s safety and wellbeing is the foremost priority for us all. The restrictions have impacted on every part of our economy and perhaps most acutely on the hospitality, theatre and events industry.
While the guidance on what we can and can’t do is managed cautiously here in Wales, the uncertainty on the future of our theatre and events programme means that we are forced to make our own judgements on how to proceed and recover from this crisis.
It is, therefore, with a great disappointment that we have to announce our plans to reschedule or cancel all large-scale events due to take place in the main auditorium at the Grand Pavilion from October until the end of January 2021.
This very sadly means that our annual pantomime Aladdin, produced by Imagine Theatre, will not go ahead this year. We look forward to welcoming back the cast and crew for the Christmas and New Year season in 2021-22, and wish to thank them for supporting us with this difficult decision.
We would also like to thank all other performers, promoters and private hirers who were due to hold events at the Grand Pavilion this year, for their patience and understanding whilst we rearrange their bookings, and to our colleagues at Bridgend County Borough Council for their support and commitment to the venue.
Although our autumn and winter programme of events may seem a long way off, there is still significant uncertainty surrounding how and when theatres, and other event venues, will be allowed to reopen - and even when they are, the corresponding guidance and working restrictions imposed will determine how viable each step is. We need to act now in order to secure a sustainable future for the Grand Pavilion and Awen Cultural Trust.
The challenges facing theatres and venues is now well publicised and, as a registered charity dedicated to providing cultural opportunity, Awen will do its bit in supporting other activities and play a prominent role in the national conversation on how theatres can transition back into places where people can once again gather to socialise, enjoy and learn.
We will be contacting customers by email and telephone with respect to transferring tickets to rescheduled dates or arranging refunds. We politely request that you wait to be contacted by us, over the coming weeks, and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding whilst we deal with thousands of people.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support, donations and kind messages – we really do appreciate it.

Announcement from Rotherham Civic Theatre - 21st July 2020
Theatres across the country are making the tough decision to reduce their staff teams or close their venues. Rotherham Civic Theatre is pleased to confirm that it has no plans to permanently close the theatre or to reduce our staff team, however with great reluctance, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the re-opening of Rotherham Civic Theatre until Spring 2021.
The government guidance and regulations place strict social distancing rules on theatres and performing arts venues both now and in the next phase of recovery. The reality of social distancing in a theatre setting is that the capacity within the auditorium is reduced to less than 10%. In discussion with industry bodies we expect social distancing for venues like ours to continue for some time, potentially even into the new year.
For this reason, to reopen with any kind of social distancing in place would not be financially viable, nor would it offer the quality of experience that we want for our audiences.
Our first priority continues to be the safety of our staff, audiences and guest performers, as we explore ways of providing the moments of community, joy and hope that we know theatre brings to our lives.
This sadly means that our much-loved pantomime Aladdin, will be postponed. However, we are working with our panto producers Imagine Theatre, to take this Christmas tradition out into communities in different ways, featuring an exciting magic box of tricks and wizardry along with a few surprise guest appearances up our puffed sleeves.
While it may not be the theatre that we know and love, for now we will continue working hard to ensure as many people as possible in Rotherham have access to theatre and the team will continue to develop new programmes for a time when we are able to be together again.
We will be contacting customers who bought tickets for shows during this period and ask for your patience as you wait to be contacted by us over the coming weeks.
The Civic Theatre team would like to thank our staff, audiences, artists, performers and communities who continue to show us great kindness, loyalty and support.
Anyone wishing to donate to the theatre to help us continue to support local and national performers and organisations at this difficult time, can do so via the Theatre website

A statement from our friends at the Palace Theatre Kilmarnock on Wednesday 1st July 2020
After careful consideration and in light of the most recent guidelines issued by the UK and Scottish Government, it is with enormous regret that we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 pantomime season. However this is not goodbye forever, oh no it isn’t! Aladdin will magically re-appear at the Palace Theatre for the Christmas season 2021.
We have made this decision after carefully assessing the options open to us in relation to social distancing the audiences within our venues as well as the cast and crew on and off stage. However, most importantly, we believe that you need to experience a pantomime in a packed auditorium with a large audience full of families & friends who can interact with the actors on stage, as that is the beauty and tradition of pantomime. If we are unable to achieve that this year then we would not be doing the artform justice. Therefore, postponing until next year feels like the most sensible, fair and safe option.
